The overall result of the pathway shown is:

2 CH3-CO-S-CoA + 2 H2O + NAD+ = -OOC-CH2-CH2-COO- + 2 HS-CoA + NADH + 3 H+
Hence the possession of the two enzymes isocitrate lyase and malate synthase, in addition to the enzymes of the citric acid cycle, allows the bacteria and plants that possess them to convert fat into carbohydrate, a capability not possessed by most animals.
